Dinner time is the perfect time for conversations and the perfect time to engage with your children. The idea of dinner time maths is to add a small spark of maths to the conversation. Discuss a mathematical idea as a family or solve a problem together.

Tonight’s dinner time maths discussion revolves around discount sign FAILS.

Start by showing your children this picture.  discountsignFAIL1 Ask them what is wrong with the sign and ask them if they can figure out what it should say. This one is just to get them warmed up. This next discount sign fail will allow for a lot more discussion and mathematical calculation.

It’s concerning that supermarkets can make mathematical errors on their signs. discountsignFAIL2 A 33% discount is being advertised as a 20% discount. Discuss how to easily calculate 10% in your head and talk about how important it is to be able to do quick mental calculations while shopping.

You don’t have to be a math wizard to have this chat, why not give it a try?

Our inspiration for Dinner Time Maths comes from Laura Bilodeau Overdeck who is the brainchild of Bedtime Math, a brilliant blog dedicated to providing you with ideas to incorporate a maths problem into every day.
